Honoring King Chulalongkorn the Great: Chulalongkorn Day in Thailand
Every year on October 23, Thailand commemorates Chulalongkorn Day (วันปิยมหาราช, Wan Piyamaharaj), a national holiday honoring King Chulalongkorn (Rama V), one of the most beloved monarchs in Thai history.
Reigning from 1868 to 1910, King Chulalongkorn is remembered for his vision, compassion, and modernization of the kingdom. He introduced sweeping reforms that shaped modern Thailand — abolishing slavery, modernizing the legal and education systems, improving infrastructure, and establishing strong diplomatic ties with other nations. His leadership helped preserve Thailand’s sovereignty during a time when much of Southeast Asia was colonized.
On this day, Thais across the country pay tribute by visiting statues and monuments of King Chulalongkorn, most notably the equestrian statue at the Royal Plaza in Bangkok. Flowers, incense, and wreaths are offered as expressions of deep gratitude and respect.
Chulalongkorn Day is not just a remembrance of a great king, but also a celebration of progress, wisdom, and the enduring spirit of the Thai nation.
